When the bearing is on work, The lubricant (oil or grease) will be thrown outward by centrifugal force. It is very important that An outer ring or channel can hold the lubricant. 

For Radial deep groove ball bearing, radial cylindrical roller bearing, self-aligning roller bearing, it is less to have lubricant; Under centrifugal force, thrust bearings cannot hold lubricating oil without the real outer circle. So the lubrication dose is large, and even continuous to supply lubricant. And the lubricant needs to be sent to a position near the rotating shaft or inner ring.
